Focus on Climate Change at the RICS Valuation Conference

The upcoming RICS Valuation Conference in London on February 21st will highlight how the industry is addressing key issues such as ESG and asset impairment, with a strong focus on climate change. One of the key sessions will be led by Tim Chapman, Managing Director at Hickman Shearer, who will facilitate a discussion within the Machinery and Business Assets breakout stream on how climate change is affecting capital asset valuations.

Expert Leadership in Asset Valuation

Tim is a highly experienced plant and equipment valuer with over 30 years in the field. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), a RICS Registered Valuer, and holds an MSc in Sustainable Design from Cranfield University. His expertise spans asset management, corporate finance, debt advisory, balance sheet and purchase price allocation, restructuring, and regulatory valuations. Hickman Shearer is a leading independent firm specializing in capital asset valuation, management, and used equipment sales.

Addressing Concerns

As a company, we have long been proactive in addressing the growing concerns about climate change. Businesses and investors are increasingly aware of the potential risks posed by climate change, yet not all are recognizing the significant financial risks associated with capital assets in high-risk sectors becoming obsolete or ‘stranded.’ In our Hickman Shearer white paper, we explored how this is impacting stranded asset impairment valuation.

Preparing for Net Zero and Future Challenges

Tim remarks, “The future presents significant challenges for the valuation sector, particularly with the increasing focus on climate change. This is why we are working with RICS and the broader capital asset valuation profession to understand the implications of net zero on asset valuations. We must be prepared to comprehend how our work impacts balance sheet valuations for asset owners and operators.”

He adds, “The RICS conference offers a critical platform for deeper understanding of climate change and its impact on capital asset valuation.”
